Why your ChatGPT flyer prints blurry

It looked crisp on your phone. On paper the text is fuzzy and the edges are soft. It isn't your printer.

It has too few pixels for the paper

ChatGPT usually hands back an image 1,024 pixels wide. Spread across an 8.5-inch sheet, that's about 120 pixels per inch, and a letter flyer read at arm's length needs about 165 to look sharp: it prints, but small text goes fuzzy. A square image fitted to the same sheet is worse, about 93, and looks plainly blurry. Your phone screen hides all of this by showing the whole flyer in a few inches.

Printed smaller, the same file looks better: as a business card it's sharp. Size is the whole story: here's the chart for every size.

Why upscaling doesn't fix it

Upscalers make a bigger image by guessing the missing detail. On photos that can look fine. On a flyer the guesses land on the lettering: edges go waxy, small text smears, and numbers can change shape. The file gets bigger; the detail was never there to recover.

What does fix it

  1. Print it smaller. The same file holds up much better at 5 × 7 or 4 × 6.
  2. Regenerate at the right size. Ask for the exact pixels in the chart. PrintSanity gives you the prompt to paste.
  3. Have it redrawn sharp. PrintSanity can redraw the same design at print resolution for $2.99. You check the words before it starts, and it checks them again after.

Two other things that go wrong

The shape. ChatGPT's tall images are 2:3; letter paper isn't. Printed anyway, the top and bottom get cut off or there are white bars down the sides.

The QR code. Image models draw something that looks like a QR code and scans to nothing. Why printed QR codes fail.
